Rupert Grint: From Harry Potter To Big Celebrity

July 3, 2010, 11:27 am

Rupert Grint catapulted to world wide fame in 2001 after he appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (the Sorcerer’s Stone in the States) as the redheaded Ron Weasley. Since then he has been an integral part of the wizarding trio alongside his co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. Rupert is beginning to make the transition from child star to adult film star by starting to take on other projects.

Rupert came into the world on August 24th, 1988, in the town of Harlowe in the south of England. He is the oldest of five Grint children, with a little brother and three little sisters. Before Rupert got the part of playing Ron he had only been in local school productions. He wanted to try for the part of Ron because he was a huge fan of the J. K. Rowling books.

Rupert Grint first heard of the casting for the Potter movie through the BBC. When he heard of it he was desperate to be given the role and posted off a tape of himself imitating his real life teacher. After the tape he was given the chance to do a screen test. After about six auditions he was finally told that he had the part.

The movie was an instant success and Rupert got great reviews for his performance as the much loved Ron Weasley. After his initial performances he was signed to reprise his role as Ron in following Harry Potter movies. He was awarded for his performances by various institutions such as the Independent Press Academy.

Besides being busy making the Harry Potter movies, Rupert has also been in Thunderpants in 2002 where he played a science nerd and Driving Lessons, in which he starred with Julie Walters in a coming of age comedy. The former was a box office bomb and the film received bad reviews from critics, but the latter was well received and earned him positive reviews for his leading role with Walters. He has also been involved with the BBC performing radio shows.

Coming up there are several projects to be released or in various stages of completion and negotiation. 2010 will see the penultimate Harry Potter film released: HP and the Deathly Hallows Part One. In 2011 the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two. There are also two other movies waiting release - Cherrybomb and Wild Target.

It seems that Rupert Grint will have no problems branching out from the Harry Potter franchise to form a successful acting career. He has consistently received good reviews for his on screen work in the Harry Potter movies and his other projects. In fact, critics of the latest Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince claimed that Rupert was the stand out among the three stars of the movie.

Rupert Grint also has an alternative career awaiting him if the acting gig doesn't work out for him as he has bought an ice cream truck. It was always his childhood dream to be an ice cream seller. It appears very remote that he will have to fall back on this though as there are several projects waiting for him to make the transition from the Harry Potter film franchise to more adult roles.
